'NO SMOKING’ HOTEL DEMANDED BY THE PUBLIC

The Carlton George's research, carried out on over 200 guests, reveals that over 95% of them believe that hotels should be completely no smoking. This statistic has surprised management at the hotel, which currently offers 20 bedrooms where smoking is permitted.

Jantiene Berg, General Manager of the Carlton George comments;

"Given that it is less than 12 months since the smoking ban was introduced in Scotland, it appears that it is hugely popular with the general public.

This wasn't really what we were expecting however the overwhelming majority of respondents proffered this as a way to improve standards."

And despite being labelled the ‘sick man' of Europe, the research also revealed that, the offer of ‘healthy' foods and drinks at breakfast, was seen as vitally important to the Scots' hotel guests.

Whilst they already offer a wide range of healthy eating and drinking options, as a result of the research the hotel has decided that on 1 July 2007, when England enters into the smoking ban, the Carlton George will become 100% non smoking.

Tom McWilliam, Area Director Glasgow for VisitScotland comments;

"Glasgow is acknowledged as a leading European city break destination. This innovative step by the Carlton George Hotel is to be applauded and I wholeheartedly support initiatives like this that use direct customer feedback to make sure Glasgow delivers the very best visitor experience".

Stuart Danskin, Senior Cancer Information Nurse with charity Cancerbackup added;

"As a service dedicated to providing information to those affected by cancer, Cancerbackup is greatly encouraged by the positive steps Carlton George Glasgow is taking. Their 100% smoking ban further supports individuals making changes in their lives to reduce their risk of cancer and other smoking related illness."
